STEM programs for high school girls

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT -Delhi) has initiated its third group of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) mentorship programs that are custom-made for high school girls perusing in Classes 9 and 11. 

The first group of 10 girls was inaugurated in December 2021, followed by the conclusion of the second batch of 32 schoolgirls in June 2023, under the backing of New Initiatives, IIT Delhi, and the Office of Academic Outreach. This year, over 200 proposal applications were acknowledged from various Delhi government schools, Kendriya Vidyalaya Schools (Delhi-NCR region), and private schools. An overall of 100 applicants have been selected for the third batch.

The STEM Mentorship Program will be revealed in three comprehensive stages. The “summer phase” — straddling from May 14 to May 24 — will comprise a 9-day workshop. The applicants will be immersed in STEM fields through professional lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and hands-on problem-solving sessions. Furthermore, a Maker Space workshop at IIT Delhi will offer students with hands-on experience in DIY schemes. In the following “At the school” stage, between July and November 2024, applicants will be involved in the Sci-Tech Spins lecture series to be held monthly on Saturdays. The interface gatherings with IIT Delhi students will enrich their education experience.

The program will conclude in the “winter phase” in January 2025 with lectures on management in STEM, entrepreneurship, and connections with talented IIT Delhi graduates. Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, inaugurated the third stage of this mentorship journey, which is intended to stimulate and empower young minds to explore careers in STEM disciplines, the mentorship program intends to adopt a cultivating environment for budding talents. We are keen to improve gender balance in our organization. This workshop delivers a chance for women students to discover opportunities in STEM and make informed professional choices built on their interests and desires, said, IIT Delhi, Prof. Rangan Banerjee.
