The stone from Sri Lanka that Entered the Guinness World Records!

Sri Lanka_ The Sri Lanka Army medical corps (SLAMC) recently entered the Guinness World Records, and it was one meticulous effort that led them to this historic event.

A team of five skilled surgeons/anesthetists at the Colombo Army Hospital were successful in removing the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone (calculus) via a crucial surgery, on the 1st of June 2023.

This complicated surgery was headed by Consultant Urologist, Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) K. Sutharshan, Head of the Genito Urinary Unit at the Colombo Army Hospital, alongside Captain (Dr) W.P.S.C Pathirathna and Dr Thamasha Premathilaka. Two Consultant Anesthetists; Colonel (Dr) U.A.L.D Perera and Colonel (Dr) C.S Abeysinghe also rendered their incredible support to the operation. 

The kidney stone which was later examined after the surgery was reported to be 801 g in weight and 13.372 cm in length.

 Upon the completion of the surgery, the kidney stone (calculus) was presented to the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, at the Army Headquarters.

According to the current Guinness World Records, the largest kidney stone in the world had been located in India (2004) and measured 13cm in length while the heaviest kidney stone was found in Pakistan (2008) with a weight of 620 g. 

Scoring another esteemed accolade for the country and the Sri Lanka Army, the conscientious efforts taken by the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps (SLAMC) were felicitated and acknowledged with much praise, by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, and other high-ranking officers of the Sri Lanka Army.

As a token of appreciation, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage recognized the contributions made by the team who performed the surgery while safeguarding the patient’s life, by pinning the Commander’s Commendation Badge to Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) K. Sutharshan who ably led the operation.
