(Commonwealth_Europe) Malta and Jordan have taken significant steps to enhance their bilateral relationship through a series of new cooperation agreements, solidifying ties across multiple strategic sectors. This development came during the eighth official visit of Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, underscoring the growing importance both nations place on their diplomatic and economic partnership.

During his stay in Jordan, Prime Minister Abela engaged in high-level discussions with King Abdullah II at Al Husseinieh Palace in Amman. Describing the talks as a valuable opportunity to advance bilateral cooperation, Abela emphasized the importance of shared values and mutual interests in driving forward the relationship between the two countries.

The visit saw the signing of several key agreements that aim to broaden collaboration in various fields, including tourism, education, culture, energy, and water resource management. Among the most notable achievements was the signing of a framework agreement to establish a permanent joint economic commission. This body will serve as a platform for ongoing dialogue and cooperation, facilitating stronger economic ties and supporting joint initiatives between Malta and Jordan.

Additional agreements focused on technical cooperation in the fields of energy and water, with both nations committed to sharing expertise and implementing sustainable solutions to address regional challenges. Another agreement targeted the development of the tourism sector, highlighting both countries’ potential for cultural exchange and economic growth through increased tourism activity. A cultural cooperation pact was also concluded, emphasizing areas such as the preservation of archives and the promotion of the Maltese language—an initiative that reflects a broader effort to foster mutual understanding and cultural heritage exchange.

Beyond the scope of bilateral cooperation, Prime Minister Abela and King Abdullah II also discussed pressing regional issues, with a particular focus on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. Abela expressed his concern over the escalating crisis and reiterated Malta’s support for humanitarian efforts and peaceful solutions in the region. He praised Jordan for its longstanding role in providing refuge to millions of displaced individuals, especially those fleeing conflict, and acknowledged the kingdom’s pivotal contributions to regional stability and dialogue.

A highlight of the Prime Minister’s visit was his tour of the Al-Zaatari refugee camp in northern Jordan. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) manages the camp, one of the largest in the region, which currently shelters approximately 80,000 Syrian refugees. It is equipped with essential infrastructure, including 32 schools and eight health centers, which provide vital services to the camp’s residents.

Recognizing the importance of sustaining these humanitarian efforts, Prime Minister Abela announced that the Maltese government will offer financial assistance to support the ongoing operations at Al-Zaatari. This contribution aims to ensure the continued delivery of education, healthcare, and other essential services to the vulnerable populations residing there.

The visit marks a new chapter in Malta-Jordan relations, grounded in a spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility. It reflects both countries’ commitment to addressing not only bilateral priorities but also broader regional challenges through dialogue, cooperation, and humanitarian engagement.
