Commonwealth _ In a promising collaborative effort between Places for London and architect DK-CM, Kilburn is poised to undergo a remarkable transformation, breathing new life into the historic arches, bridges, and surrounding external spaces. This project aims to create a vibrant new public realm, fostering community engagement and improving sustainability while offering a range of benefits to tenants and the local population. The proposed enhancements will revamp the area between Kilburn High Road and Loveridge Road, providing a welcoming oasis away from the bustling High Street. Central to the project is the revitalization of arch units, encompassing not only new frontages but also a keen focus on energy efficiency. By incorporating air source heat pumps for heating and cooling, the project promises not only to create more efficient spaces for tenants but also reduce overall operating utility costs, a win-win for all involved.
Urban greening initiatives are an essential facet of the proposal, with the installation of planters and tree pits serving as a nod to sustainability. These green additions will not only contribute to environmental well-being but also enhance the ambiance of the location, making it a more pleasant and inviting space. Throughout the development process, Places for London demonstrated its commitment to community collaboration. Prioritizing the needs and aspirations of the local community was at the forefront of this endeavor. Inclusivity was the key, with a range of considerations taken into account when engaging with the community. This approach included both online and in-person sessions, accommodating various time slots to ensure participation from diverse segments of the population. Furthermore, Places for London employed multiple engagement methods, such as questionnaires, interviews, and design exhibitions. These initiatives provided stakeholders and locals with opportunities to share their vision for the arches, making it a truly community-driven effort. The result was a staggering 60 percent of survey responses from women, with the majority of engagement workshops and exhibitions boasting at least 50 percent representation from women.
The project aligns with the “Safety in Public Space | Women, Girls and Gender Diverse People” initiative. Consequently, the team gave particular attention to how the area could be shaped and designed to enhance safety, particularly for those with less prominent voices in the community. This inclusive approach has translated into improvements in general lighting and security in the area. CCTV cameras will be installed to enhance security along the mews, addressing potential hotspots for anti-social behavior. This proactive approach ensures that the public space not only looks welcoming but also fosters a sense of security, crucial for everyone who uses it.
Community participation was extended to local schools, with geography students from Hampstead School studying the project sites and providing valuable recommendations. The feedback gathered in these sessions was incorporated into the development proposals. For example, it informed plans for pedestrianizing the area, introducing seating, cycle parking, and creating welcoming public spaces. This collaborative effort demonstrates the project’s commitment to not only revamping the physical space but also engaging the local community in its design and planning.
