U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a temporary halt on military aid to Ukraine, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy toward the conflict with Russia. The decision follows a tense exchange between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the future of the war and potential peace negotiations.
A White House official stated that the administration is reviewing the aid to ensure it aligns with efforts to achieve peace. This pause applies to all military assistance, including munitions, anti-tank weapons, and other materials not yet delivered to Ukraine. The move effectively suspends the use of nearly $4 billion in previously approved funding for Kyiv.
Since taking office, Trump has pushed for an end to the war in Ukraine, with his administration having adopted a more measured stance toward Moscow—a shift from previous U.S. policy. The situation escalated last week during an Oval Office meeting, during which Trump reportedly criticized Zelensky for being insufficiently grateful for Washington’s support. Following the exchange, Trump concluded that the Ukrainian leader was not prepared for peace.
Zelensky had traveled to Washington with expectations of finalizing a mineral deal that would grant the U.S. access to Ukraine’s critical mineral supply. The agreement was considered a way for the U.S. to offset some of its substantial aid contributions while bolstering Ukraine’s economy. However, the heated meeting left the deal unsigned. Trump later stated that discussions could resume if Zelensky demonstrated more appreciation for U.S. assistance.
The suspension of aid has raised concerns among European allies, who have sought to increase their support for Ukraine. The European Union has already contributed approximately $145 billion in total aid since the war began. European nations, including France and Britain, have considered offering additional assistance and even military support in the event of a ceasefire. However, such proposals may require backing from the U.S.
Critics argue that the aid freeze could weaken Ukraine’s defense capabilities, while supporters of the decision see it as part of Trump’s broader push for a peace agreement. The administration has not provided details on the duration of the pause or whether it will impact intelligence sharing and ongoing military cooperation. However, Trump is expected to address the matter further in an upcoming speech to Congress.
