Two pedestrians are killed in Amqui, Quebec

-

Canada_ (Commonwealth) _ At Amqui, Quebec, roughly 640 kilometers northeast of Montreal, a pickup truck struck pedestrians, leaving two persons dead and nine others hurt, according to the Quebec provincial police. According to a Sûreté du Québec spokeswoman, the driver, a 38-year-old man, reportedly left the scene of the incident but subsequently turned himself in and was detained at the Amqui police station (SQ).

The incident happened on Monday just after 3 p.m. outside the Captive microbrewery on Saint-Benoît Boulevard. “Walking along Highway 132, the pickup truck’s driver struck some people. At a certain distance, he kept going and ran into other people “commented Sgt. Claude Doiron.

Due to the large number of shocked witnesses, Turmel added that the CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent has also sent psychological support right to the crash site. He stated that the hospital would offer a similar level of assistance. In lieu of attending the legislature on Tuesday, the local member of the National Assembly, Pascal Bérubé, traveled to Amqui, a town of about 6,000 inhabitants in his Matane-Matapédia district.

Sylvie Blanchette, the mayor of Amqui, stated she is there for the people as she arrived at the site of the incident. Two hours after the collision, Geneviève Guilbault, Quebec’s deputy premier, told Radio-Canada that it was too soon to determine whether the driver intentionally struck the pedestrians, but that the incident reminded her of what happened last month in Laval, where police claim a city bus was intentionally rammed into a daycare, killing two children.

She said it’s obvious that this is a serious tragedy since the CISSS is moving rapidly to provide psychological assistance, but it’s still unknown exactly how many people have been killed. Alain Gilbert, a trucker, said that on Monday while behind the wheel, he observed an ambulance speeding up behind him with sirens blasting. About 3:15 p.m., he pulled over to allow the ambulance to pass before arriving at the scene of the crash. According to him, over a space of 500 meters, at least four individuals were laying on the ground. He witnessed the SQ policeman giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to one victim. He said that police and other rescues were present.
