UK government addresses the devastating…

-

Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – Government officials, law enforcement agencies, academics, survivors, charitable organizations, and industry representatives recently joined hands to address the distressing issue of acid attacks and explore further measures to safeguard society.

This collaborative meeting, co-chaired by Safeguarding Minister Sarah Dines and Katie Piper OBE, provided a platform for government bodies, law enforcement, trade regulators, charitable groups, retailers, and delivery services to review the progress made in preventing and combating acid attacks. The discussions aimed to identify additional actions to combat these heinous acts of violence that inflict severe harm on individuals.

The government’s approach to countering the use of acid and other corrosive substances in violent incidents revolves around four primary pillars: robust law enforcement, effective legislation, the provision of support for victims and survivors, and collaboration with retailers to limit access to corrosive products and hazardous substances.

Minister for Safeguarding Sarah Dines expressed that acid attacks have profound and enduring consequences, leaving victims with both physical and emotional scars. The government’s concern and empathy continue to extend to all survivors and their families.

“We know that legislation alone will not prevent attacks, which is why conversations such as today’s are so important.  I thank those who participated, especially, Katie Piper, Andreas Christopheros and the other survivors who are so brave and courageous.”

The roundtable assembly convened various entities, both within and outside of the government, with the shared objective of safeguarding the public against such attacks. The central discussion revolved around the statutory responsibilities of retailers, particularly concerning age verification, and ensuring that they possess all the requisite resources for the vigilant enforcement of these obligations. Additionally, the gathering delved into brainstorming initiatives for further diminishing the potential for corrosive products to be misappropriated as weapons. Questions were raised regarding the seriousness with which retailers approach this issue and whether more proactive steps can be taken by their staff to scrutinize and question the purpose of purchases at the point of sale.
