Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ The recent update to the United Kingdom’s travel advisory for Sri Lanka is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s tourism sector, leading to increased confidence and a rise in tourist arrivals, particularly during the upcoming summer season. This update, issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) last week effective from April 5, marks a shift in the advisory stance following the economic and political challenges faced by Sri Lanka.

The comprehensive update covers various aspects such as access to emergency medical services, security entry requirements, road safety, complete security situation, and health facility accessibility, as highlighted by the President’s Media Division. Notably, previous concerns such as shortages of food, fuel, and medicine have not been included, along with the omission of risks related to limitations in health services and medical equipment availability.

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando welcomed the update, emphasizing its potential positive impact on tourism across key markets, with the UK’s advisory often influencing other countries. He highlighted the role of dialogues with the British High Commissioner and interventions in facilitating the update, while also expressing frustration over political disruptions that could undermine national interests. Similarly, Priantha Fernando, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), viewed the update as a significant validation of the destination’s appeal from a tourism perspective. He stressed the importance of accurate advisories in protecting citizens abroad while refraining from interfering unless necessary.

Additionally, the optimism surrounding the update was echoed by industry players, anticipating a prosperous summer season with increased interest from UK travelers. Furthermore, Nishad Wijetunga, President of SLAITO, highlighted the potential benefits for the upcoming season, particularly in attracting families from the UK during their summer vacations. Despite facing multiple crises in recent years, Sri Lanka saw a substantial number of tourists from the UK, with arrivals doubling last year compared to 2022.

Wijetunga also highlighted the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) UK, Minister Harin Fernando, SLAITO, and other industry leaders, in influencing the update through engagement with the FCDO UK. Notably, the UK ranked as the third largest source market for Sri Lanka tourism as of April, with a significant increase in tourist arrivals during the initial days of April, reflecting the positive impact of the updated advisory on traveler perceptions and preferences.
