(Commonwealth_ The Khurda Road division of Indian Railways has achieved an extraordinary feat by loading 100 million tonnes of freight within just 234 days in the current financial year, starting from April 1 to November 20, 2024. In addition to this remarkable achievement, the division has become the first in Indian Railways to handle a total traffic volume—comprising both loading and unloading—of 187 million tonnes in the same 234-day period. This includes 100 million tonnes of freight loaded and 87 million tonnes unloaded.

The division managed to surpass its previous record by achieving this milestone four days earlier than in the 2023–2024 financial year, during which the target was reached in 238 days. This significant accomplishment generated revenue of ₹9,130 crore for the administration, exceeding the ₹9,001 crore earned during the same period last year.

Overcoming Challenges to Achieve Success

Despite facing a range of challenges, including cyclones, labor issues at sidings, and strikes, the Khurda Road division achieved this milestone. The ability to maintain operational efficiency and overcome these obstacles highlights the Khurda Road division’s commitment to excellence and its robust planning mechanisms.

Key to this success has been effective coordination with government sectors and industries at all loading points within the division’s jurisdiction. Meticulous planning and seamless collaboration with stakeholders played a critical role in achieving this milestone, showcasing the division’s ability to optimize resources and enhance operational efficiency.

Major contributors to freight loading

Several key areas under the Khurda Road division’s jurisdiction contributed significantly to this achievement:

Coal Loading: Coal remained the primary contributor, with 75 million tonnes loaded during the financial year 2024–2025. Major coal-loading points included Talcher and Paradip, which are vital hubs for coal transportation

Raw Materials for Steel Plants: The division transported 4 million tonnes of raw materials to steel plants located at Meramandali, Jakhpura, Sukinda, and Kerjanga. These plants are critical to the steel manufacturing industry and depend heavily on efficient freight logistics.

Finished Steel: A total of 7 million tonnes of finished steel was transported, further strengthening the supply chain for the steel sector.

Iron Ore: Iron ore shipments contributed 5 million tonnes, with Nayagarh serving as a key loading point.

Other Goods: The division also transported 6 million tonnes of miscellaneous goods, including cement, food grains, fertilizers, and mineral oil. The Khurda Road division handles a diverse range of freight, as evidenced by these commodities.

Ports and Industrial Hubs

The ports of Paradip, Dhamara, and Gopalpur were instrumental in driving freight volumes; they served as vital gateways for exports and imports. Additionally, the division catered to various industrial hubs, ensuring the smooth movement of raw materials and finished goods across sectors.

Setting New Benchmarks for Indian Railways

The Khurda Road division’s accomplishments have set a new benchmark for Indian Railways, demonstrating the potential for efficient freight management even in challenging conditions. The division’s ability to improve performance year-over-year reflects its commitment to operational excellence and innovation.

Looking ahead, the division aims to build on this momentum by further improving coordination with stakeholders and expanding its capacity to handle even larger freight volumes. With its proven track record and strategic importance within the Indian Railways network, the Khurda Road division is well-positioned to continue contributing to the economic growth of the region and the country.

Strategic Importance of Khurda Road Division

As one of the most strategically important divisions in Indian Railways, Khurda Road serves as a critical hub for freight movement in Eastern India. Its connectivity to major industrial zones, ports, and resource-rich regions underscores its pivotal role in supporting the nation’s supply chain infrastructure.

In conclusion, the Khurda Road division’s achievement of 100 million tonnes of freight loading in just 234 days stands as a testament to its efficiency, resilience, and dedication to excellence.
