India (Commonwealth Union)_ A computer expert has sparked global interest with a unique experiment that combines technology and an unlikely subject, a goldfish. The experiment, which was both amusing and inventive, currently holds the record for successfully demonstrating how a fish can operate a miniature car. The innovation was created by Dutch engineer Thomas de Wolf, who devised a tiny automobile with a transparent, water-filled tank. Inside the tank swims a goldfish, whose natural movements are used to drive the vehicle.

A motion-sensing camera tracks the fish’s position and translates its movement into signals that control the car. When the fish swims toward one side, the car responds by moving in that same direction, creating the illusion that the fish is driving the car. The experiment was officially showcased on the Italian television program “Lo Show dei Record,” filmed in Milan. During the broadcast, a goldfish named Blub set a world record for the longest distance traveled in a motion-controlled vehicle within one minute. The small car covered 12.28 meters, comfortably exceeding the minimum requirement of five meters. Any movement, forward or backward, counted toward the total distance.

The record-setting endeavor was overseen by a Guinness World Records adjudicator, who made sure everything adhered to the guidelines. The distance, rather than being calculated by some complex system, was determined by a straightforward method: counting the number of times a colored spot on the car’s wheels touched the ground during its journey. The live audience, buzzing with excitement, observed as Blub drove the vehicle across the stage, offering enthusiastic support to the fish. Television host Gerry Scotti characterized the event as both delightful and forward-looking, perfectly encapsulating the curious mix of simplicity and cutting-edge technology that defined the experiment. In the end, the record was officially awarded to both de Wolf and his sweet aquatic collaborator.

De Wolf later explained that the idea grew out of a desire to break away from the routine of his daily work. As a computer engineer, he often deals with complex but repetitive tasks. This project, he said, was his way of introducing a sense of fun while also demonstrating that technology can be used in imaginative and unexpected ways. He emphasized that innovation does not always have to serve a serious purpose. Sometimes it’s just about making people laugh while also demonstrating some level of creativity. Furthermore, he noted that brightly colored fish are well-suited for this project, as the camera will be able to capture the fish’s movement quickly. In reflecting upon his great accomplishment, he made jokes about how he would tell a goldfish about the record. While this was just an experiment, it was more than just a funny trick. It also shows how a small idea, when combined with technology, can result in something really amazing.
