Unifeeder Group Secures Two Innovative Methanol-Ready Container Feeder Vessels

-

(Commonwealth) _ Unifeeder Group, a prominent player in the maritime industry and a subsidiary of DP World, has taken significant strides towards sustainable shipping with the completion of a long-term charter agreement for two additional methanol-capable container feeder vessels. This move, following the initial announcement in October 2023, underscores the group’s commitment to environmental responsibility and greener shipping solutions.

Charter Agreement Details

In collaboration with German-based ship-owning group Elbdeich Reederei and Norwegian shipowner MPC Container Ships (MPCC), each responsible for one vessel, Unifeeder is set to welcome two 1250 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) methanol-capable vessels in 2026. These vessels will be integrated into Unifeeder’s European network, solidifying the group’s dedication to sustainable practices and emission reduction.

Sustainable Shipping Initiatives

Emission Reduction Efforts

Unifeeder’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the chartering of methanol-capable vessels. The group aims to reduce emissions by 25% by 2030, surpassing industry averages. The ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with a focus on fuel-efficient practices, regular maintenance, and the utilization of biofuels in conventional vessels.

Collaboration with Industry Partners

Aligned with its parent company, DP World, Unifeeder collaborates with industry partners to address the challenge of renewable methanol supply. Off-take commitments are crucial to establishing production at a scale capable of replacing conventional fossil fuels within the maritime industry. This collaborative approach showcases a broader commitment to industry-wide sustainability.

Methanol-Powered Vessels

Jesper Kristensen, Group CEO of Unifeeder, highlights the significance of this move, stating, “Building upon our commitment to methanol-powered vessels last year, this marks another significant stride towards the green transformation of our fleet and operations.” Anticipated to commence operations within the next two years, these vessels align with Unifeeder’s commitment to offering customers sustainable alternatives while actively working towards ambitious decarbonization goals.

Decarbonization Plan and Ambitious Targets

Unifeeder Group’s investment in the two additional methanol-capable ships is a pivotal aspect of its broader decarbonization plan. Going beyond industry standards, the group aims to achieve a 25% reduction in emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050, with a particular focus on avoiding any new fossil greenhouse gas emissions. This commitment is echoed throughout the organization, emphasizing fuel-efficient practices, regular maintenance, and fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.

Collaboration with DP World Marine Services

As part of DP World Marine Services, Unifeeder contributes to the broader sustainability efforts of its parent company. In December 2023, DP World Marine Services achieved a remarkable 16% reduction in its carbon footprint from its 2019 baseline of 2,118 ktCO2e. This reduction was achieved by creating efficiencies across operations, showcasing the group’s dedication to sustainable practices and carbon footprint reduction.

First Movers Coalition and Future Targets

DP World, and by extension Unifeeder Group, has joined the First Movers Coalition, indicating a commitment to being pioneers in the transition towards zero-emission fuels. DP World has set a target for 5% of its marine power to come from zero-emissions fuels by 2030, aligning with its overall strategy for decarbonization. This commitment to proactive change positions Unifeeder as a leader in the adoption of sustainable practices within the maritime industry.

Unifeeder Group’s successful charter agreement for methanol-capable vessels, in collaboration with esteemed partners, marks a significant milestone in its sustainable shipping journey. The commitment to emission reduction, collaboration with industry partners, and the adoption of methanol-powered vessels showcase a proactive approach towards a greener future. As Unifeeder continues its efforts, it sets an example for the maritime industry, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible shipping landscape. The company’s dedication to ambitious targets, collaboration, and continuous improvement positions it as a leader in the evolving narrative of sustainable shipping practices.
