Uniting Against Fraud: A Groundbreaking Roundtable Paves the Way for Industry Collaboration

Africa (Commonwealth Union) Distinguished professionals from finance, technology, law enforcement, and regulatory sectors convened at the inaugural Piggyvest Cybersecurity Roundtable on Victoria Island, Lagos, to address pressing fraud challenges. Themed Unified Front: Tackling Industry-Wide Fraud Challenges Together, the event served as a platform for insightful discussions, sharing best practices, and fostering collaboration to bolster fraud prevention efforts across industries.

Key stakeholders included representatives from Interswitch, NIBSS, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Kuda Bank, Moniepoint, and Flutterwave, among others. Oluwasegun Ojumola, Senior Fraud & Investigation Analyst at Piggyvest, welcomed the attendees and emphasized the crucial role of trust and collaboration in safeguarding the payment ecosystem. “To harness the potential within this space, we must work together as stakeholders and businesses,” Ojumola remarked.

The keynote address by Adebayo Adebeshin, Chief Audit Executive at Interswitch, focused on Strengthening Resilience: The Role of Internal Collaboration in Threat Defense. He stressed the need for proactive internal strategies to combat fraud. “No organization can act alone. Collaboration is not just important—it is essential,” Adebeshin emphasized.

During the panel discussion, moderated by Oluwaseunfunmi Okuntola of Piggyvest, experts including Kayode Agbetoye (Stanbic IBTC Bank) and Nujinim Egwegbete-Odukwu (Flutterwave) shared strategies for effective fraud management. They highlighted the importance of adaptive frameworks to stay ahead of evolving threats, advocating for real-time information sharing across organizations.

Participants lauded the roundtable for creating a unique opportunity to foster professional connections. David Samson, Fraud Analyst at Paystack, appreciated the event for its practical relevance. “I’ve gained valuable insights to tackle day-to-day challenges,” he said. Similarly, Esther Ahmed of Titan Trust Bank noted the significance of learning from industry case studies to anticipate fraud tactics and protect customers.

In her closing remarks, Ibukun Akinola, Head of Customer Finance at PiggyTech Global Limited, reinforced the company’s dedication to cybersecurity and emphasized the need for industry-wide collaboration. “This forum is a testament to what we can achieve collectively in combating fraud. Events like this influence policy, foster engagement, and drive impactful change.”

Echoing these sentiments, attendees called for more collaborative efforts to create awareness and enhance the resilience of financial institutions. As Kayode Agbetoye put it, “Together, we can reduce the exposure to fraud and build a more secure financial ecosystem.”

This groundbreaking roundtable demonstrated the power of unity in tackling shared challenges and set a promising precedent for future collaboration.
