India (Commonwealth Union)_ The University of Chicago has officially launched its Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth in India, a major initiative designed to address the urgent challenges of climate change and sustainable development. This new center, which builds on the University’s longstanding legacy of innovative research and international collaboration, aims to harness cutting-edge academic expertise to balance the critical need for addressing climate change with the necessity of fostering economic growth. The Institute will focus on advancing research in climate economics and policy, energy technologies, particularly in battery development, and climate systems engineering. The Institute aims to tailor solutions to India’s specific challenges in these areas through partnerships with Indian academic institutions, industry leaders, and government agencies.

Michael Greenstone, the director of the new Institute and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC), underscored the importance of balancing environmental sustainability with economic growth. “Inexpensive energy is essential for growth, especially in developing countries, but it often comes at the expense of the environment. The Institute’s mission is to find innovative solutions that allow for sustainable growth while mitigating the environmental impact of energy production and consumption,” Greenstone explained. The establishment of this Institute further builds on the success of the University of Chicago’s Center in Delhi, which has been a hub for academic partnerships and impactful research since its inception in 2014. Over the past decade, the Center has contributed to numerous initiatives addressing critical issues such as energy access, water pollution, and emissions reductions. These efforts have focused on creating practical, real-world solutions that have made a tangible impact across India.

Supratik Guha, Faculty Director of the UChicago Center in Delhi, emphasized the significance of this new Institute as an extension of the Center’s work. “The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth is a natural evolution of the work we’ve undertaken over the past ten years. We have established strong relationships with local partners, including government bodies and industry leaders, and these collaborations have driven meaningful outcomes. The launch of this Institute will enable us to focus more intensely on the pressing challenges of climate change and the achievement of sustainable development goals,” he said.

Leni Chaudhuri, Executive Director of the UChicago Center in Delhi, also highlighted the strategic importance of the Institute in supporting global solutions to climate change and sustainable growth. “The launch of the Institute marks a new chapter in our ongoing commitment to addressing global challenges. We are excited about the potential for collaboration and the impact we can have in India and beyond,” Chaudhuri noted. Furthermore, in the past decade, the University of Chicago has undertaken more than two dozen projects in India, collaborating with government and industry partners across eleven states. These initiatives have spanned various sectors, from improving electricity markets and developing real-time water pollution sensors to supporting farmers with advanced weather forecasting and contributing to the development of emissions markets. EPIC India has spearheaded much of this work and will continue to play a pivotal role within the new Institute.

The government and private industry are increasing their investments in India’s sustainability sector, positioning it for significant growth. Guha highlighted the emergence of green jobs in sectors such as clean energy and emissions management as an exciting opportunity. He also noted the substantial rise in research funding in India over the past two decades, though he acknowledged that the country’s research intensity still lags behind that of global leaders like the US and China. Despite this, Guha expressed optimism about India’s future trajectory, recognizing its growing potential in addressing climate challenges and sustainable development. As the Institute embarks on its mission, it promises to become a key player in driving research and innovation that will help shape India’s response to climate change, promoting sustainable growth and development both within the country and globally.
