US Treasury’s Bessent Faces G20 Diplomacy Test Amid Tariffs, Iran War & Bond Turmoil

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent entered the latest G20 finance meetings facing an unusually crowded diplomatic agenda. Trade disputes, the continuing Iran conflict, rising energy costs and nervous bond markets have placed Washington’s economic strategy under intense scrutiny. Bessent is seeking cooperation from major economies while promoting President Donald Trump’s priorities on tariffs, growth and trade imbalances.

At the centre of the discussions is Washington’s effort to persuade G20 partners to confront what it describes as persistent trade distortions. Bessent has argued that large export surpluses and non-market practices can damage manufacturing economies. China has resisted the American position, while other G20 participants have shown greater willingness to discuss measures addressing excess industrial capacity and uneven global demand.

The trade debate is unfolding alongside continuing tensions between Washington and Ottawa. U.S. tariffs have strained relations with Canada, traditionally one of America’s closest economic partners. European governments are also navigating the consequences of changing U.S. trade policy. For Bessent, winning support for a common approach to trade while defending unilateral American tariff measures represents a particularly difficult diplomatic balancing act.

Iran has added another layer of complexity. Washington is seeking international support for increased economic pressure on Tehran and has warned that countries continuing significant transactions involving Iranian oil could face secondary sanctions. Bessent’s strategy therefore requires cooperation from economies that maintain important energy relationships with Iran, particularly China, making the diplomatic challenge considerably more complicated.

Energy markets have amplified those difficulties. The conflict has disrupted supplies and pushed fuel prices higher, creating fresh inflationary pressure across major economies. Higher energy costs can weaken consumer demand while forcing central banks to reconsider interest-rate policies. The resulting uncertainty makes Bessent’s appeal for stronger economic growth harder to achieve, particularly when governments are simultaneously dealing with elevated borrowing costs.

Bond markets provide perhaps the most immediate financial warning. Sovereign yields have risen sharply across several major economies as investors reassess inflation, government borrowing and geopolitical risks. U.S. Treasury yields have also come under pressure, while Washington’s debt burden has become an increasingly important concern. Bessent has promoted Treasury buybacks and growth-oriented policies, but investors remain sensitive to the sustainability of America’s fiscal position.

The scale of U.S. borrowing adds pressure to the Treasury secretary’s message. America’s national debt has surpassed $40 trillion, while concerns about future deficits have contributed to questions over the long-term attractiveness of Treasury securities. Bessent has emphasized economic expansion, deregulation and measures designed to strengthen growth. Yet stronger growth alone may not reassure investors if government spending and debt continue rising rapidly.

Bessent is also attempting to reshape the G20’s economic conversation. Rather than expanding the forum into numerous policy areas, he has emphasized growth, debt management, trade and private-sector activity. The approach reflects the Trump administration’s preference for deregulation and market-led expansion. Other governments, however, retain different priorities, meaning Washington’s ambition to redefine the group’s agenda may encounter resistance.

China remains central to almost every major issue confronting Bessent. Beijing’s export strength, its relationship with Iran and its position in global supply chains make Chinese cooperation important, while strategic rivalry makes compromise difficult. Recent G20 discussions showed that China was unwilling to join other members in endorsing the U.S.-backed criticism of trade distortions, underlining the limits of Washington’s diplomatic influence.

The Asheville meetings therefore represent more than another routine gathering of finance ministers. Bessent must simultaneously reassure investors, defend U.S. trade policy, build support for pressure on Iran and maintain dialogue with major economic competitors. Whether Washington can reconcile those objectives will influence perceptions of American economic leadership. The outcome could also determine how effectively the G20 responds to the combination of geopolitical conflict, inflation, trade fragmentation and mounting sovereign debt.
