What does Taurine and black pepper concoction got to do?

An increase intake of Western diet, which contains saturated fats, salt and sugar along with sedentary lifestyles, has augmented the global burden of cardiovascular events. World’s leading cause for death is cardiovascular disease (CVD). An estimated 17.9 million people died from CVDs, in 2019, accounting for 32% of all global deaths. 85 % of these deaths were caused by stroke or heart attack.

For many centuries, to treat diseases natural products were used. Recently, due to the cardioprotective effects, black pepper and taurine are given more attention, based on anti-atherosclerotic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and anti -hypertensive properties.

Recently, scientist reviewed the existing literature to understand whether a combination of black pepper and taurine extract are effective to reduce the risk factors of cardiovascular disease. In the journal nutrients, this review is available.

Multiple conditions are associated with cardiovascular diseases, which affects the blood vessels and heart. The CVD’s will contribute to over 22 million deaths annually by 2030, this was estimated by, The World Health Organization (WHO).  Multiple diseases such as hypertension, heart failure (HF), stroke, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infarction (MI) are categorized under CVD’s.

Dyslipidemia, hypertension, cholesterol and type- 2 diabetes are some factors which enhance the risk of CVD’s.

Hyper-inflammation, oxidative stress, hyperlipidemia and endothelial dysfunction are common phenotypes in the pathogenesis of           CVD’s. to alleviate or prevent CVD’s, these are the primary targets for therapeutic intervention. Even though conventional treatments are effective foe CVD’s, they have many side effects as well. Therefore, natural products which contains medicinal properties are attractive alternatives for CVD treatment.

Taurine is a non-toxic natural product which can be found in human cardiac and vascular tissues. The majority of taurine is obtained by consuming seafood, meat, poultry and eggs.

Many studies have indicated that taurine has anti- hyperlipidemia, anti – platelet, anti – oxidation and anti – inflammatory activities. It also can modulate blood pressure, vascular tone and iron transporters.

Due to the presence of high levels of terpenoids or terpenes, black peppers (Piper nigrum) are mostly used to treat several diseases. These bioactive compounds are a diverse class of organic compounds which are found in plant- based essential oils.

For the progression and severity of CVD’s, acute and chronic inflammation plays a crucial role. Atherosclerosis, hypertension and CAD’s which are chronic inflammatory diseases, are characterized by elevated expression of important pro-inflammatory receptors.

To synthesize a less reactive and toxic compound, taurine reacts with hypochlorous acid. TauCI, which protects cells in response to oxidative stress and acts as an anti-inflammatory modulator, which restricts the production of pro- inflammatory factors. Notably, TauCI prevents the progression of atherosclerosis but improves the vascular health.

The present study observed that dual treatment of taurine and black pepper terpenes could exert synergistic antioxidant and oxidative- protective effects, which will help to prevent oxidative damage in cardiovascular aetiologies and other oxidative diseases.
