What If Happiness Has an Ocean View? TVNZ’s ‘Coastal Wonders’ Explores the Power of Place

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — August 24, 2026 — What if the secret of becoming happier at home is not having additional bedrooms, larger kitchens, or more expensive couches but is rather being able to open your door and see the ocean?

This is the exciting question behind the new architectural/lifestyle show Coastal Wonders by TVNZ, where amazing houses, stunning landscapes, and the science of happiness come together. Tom Webster, architect and host of Grand Designs NZ, will discuss whether the places we live in can indeed define our feelings, thoughts, and lives in general.

According to the review from The Spinoff from August 24, 2026, the answer appears to be almost comically simple: yes, especially if your home is a masterpiece of architecture located right next to a water body.

Nevertheless, Coastal Wonders is pursuing a more ambitious goal than just leading expensive homes on the screen.

The first season consists of eight episodes and was released on Sunday, August 2, 2026, airing each week at 7:30 on TVNZ 1 and can be streamed via TVNZ+. The fourth episode aired on Sunday, August 23, with the fifth episode expected on Sunday, August 30.

Webster goes to New Zealand and the broader South Pacific, looking at the architecture of homes located in Tauranga, Tasmania, Fiji, Vanuatu, Australia, Tahiti and Northland. The show does not regard the architecture solely as bricks, concrete and glass; it explores how buildings influence their environments and how these influences, in turn, might affect people living in them.

The most curious experiment in the series is that of Webster being fitted with an EEG helmet to check how the brain functions when in different architectural settings. The concept sounds exciting: could a stunning ocean view, natural light, sound, spaciousness and presence of nature create profound differences in brain functions?

The episode starts with a Pahoia House in Tauranga, an award-winning house with a total area of about 1,000 square metres, which is a private-island boathouse in Tasmania. Other episodes include various coast-to-coast houses like the cliff residence in Noosa, the remotely powered curved house in Northland, and the tropical Tahitian house.

However, there is more to the story than what is immediately apparent.

The main aspect of the programme may not even be the mansion but the surrounding area. Forests, singing birds, beaches, pohutukawa trees, ocean horizons and many other views become a part of architecture. In these homes, the distinction between outdoors and indoors feels nonexistent.

This information helps explain how the Coastal Wonders viewers can be understood. According to NZ On Air data dated August 19, 2026, Coastal Wonders gained an average of 330,500 viewers aged five and older during the calculation period of July 12–August 8, becoming number two on the list of the top 10 funded television programmes.

At the same time, the paradox is inevitable. Many viewers don’t regard these homes as realistic housing options. According to The Spinoff, many of the properties are costly, making the series an exercise in escapism rather than exploration of architecture and wellbeing.

Perhaps that’s the true enchantment of the show.

Coastal Wonders contemplates the question of whether a beautiful residence can increase our happiness. However, in reality, it makes viewers ask themselves a more complex question:

Does the house guarantee a better quality of life, or do the ocean, sunlight, tree coverage, space, and liberty play the crucial role here?

For those watching the show from home, far from the beach, this question may be the most costly luxury.
