Maharashtra (Commonwealth Union) – Popular Indian filmmaker Hansal Mehta and producer Sahil Saigal are teaming up to bring a Hindi-language adaptation of the popular Sri Lankan adult-comedy Tentigo (originally titled Nelum Kuluna) to Indian audiences. The project is being produced under their banner, True Story Films, in collaboration with indie powerhouse Crawling Angel Films. This marks an exciting new venture, with celebrated casting director Mukesh Chhabra making his debut as a producer.

The original film, Tentigo, written and directed by Sri Lankan filmmaker Ilango Ram, opened in Sri Lankan theaters on March 14 to widespread acclaim. Additionally, Tentigo becomes the first Sri Lankan film to be remade in multiple languages.

The film’s Tamil-language adaptation, titled Perusu, also made its debut on the same day, adding to the excitement surrounding the project. Both versions have garnered attention for their bold, comedic narrative, which explores the cultural and emotional complexities surrounding death and family dynamics in a small village. Tentigo revolves around the story of an elderly man who is respected and revered by his community. However, his funeral becomes an awkward ordeal when it is discovered that he passed away with a post-mortem erection, leaving his family struggling to keep the condition a secret from the villagers. With its sharp humor and irreverent approach to taboo subjects, the film has earned both praise and controversy for its adult content.

The Hindi remake will carry forward the original film’s unique blend of humor and emotion, with Hansal Mehta bringing his signature filmmaking style to the project. Mehta, known for his critically acclaimed work on Scam 1992 – The Harshad Mehta Story, expressed his excitement for the adaptation, stating, “I’m not usually in favor of remakes, but this one had me genuinely excited. The moment I saw Tentigo, I couldn’t stop laughing. It was sharp, irreverent, and yet deeply emotional – the kind of story that stays with you. I believe this adaptation will resonate with audiences across India.” The casting for the Hindi remake has yet to be revealed, and while the director’s name remains under wraps, Karan Vyas, who worked on Scam 1992 and Scam 2003, will be handling the film’s adaptation to Hindi.

It has since been recognized as the first Sri Lankan film to be remade in multiple languages, including Spanish, Italian, English, Hindi, Telugu, and Malayalam. Additionally, the Malayalam and Kannada-dubbed versions of Perusu are already in the pipeline. With a promising team behind it and a story that blends humor with a touch of irreverence, the Hindi remake of Tentigo is already generating significant buzz, and audiences are eagerly awaiting what Mehta and Chhabra will bring to this bold and unconventional story.
