The Faith in the Commonwealth Initiative, launched in partnership with the Khalili Foundation in 2017, aims to empower young people while fostering collaboration with older generations. The initiative seeks to promote sustainable harmony and peacebuilding efforts that resonate across the Commonwealth’s 56 member states. By recognizing and celebrating individuals who bridge divides and foster understanding, the Commonwealth Peace Prize embodies these core objectives. During a briefing held on 6 December 2024 in London, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, announced the extension of the nomination deadline. Addressing High Commissioners and representatives of Commonwealth Accredited Organisations, she highlighted the vital role peace plays in establishing equitable and just societies.
“Cultivating a culture of peace lies at the heart of the Commonwealth Charter,” said Secretary-General Scotland. “Over a decade ago, our member states reaffirmed their collective belief that peace, security, respect, and understanding—fundamental Commonwealth values—are critical for achieving the progress and prosperity we all strive for. The Commonwealth Peace Prize is a testament to these ideals.” She further encouraged member states and Commonwealth organisations to participate actively, emphasizing the importance of nominating individuals whose remarkable efforts have contributed to unity and harmony within their communities.

The Commonwealth Peace Prize will be awarded triennially, serving as a platform to acknowledge long-standing peacebuilders who have utilized the transformative power of faith to foster dialogue, resolve conflicts, and inspire younger generations. Sir David Khalili, Founder and Chairman of the Khalili Foundation, stressed the profound impact of faith as a tool for peacebuilding. “Faith transcends religious boundaries and can be a powerful catalyst for unity and harmony,” he remarked. “We are honoured to collaborate with the Commonwealth in establishing and funding this landmark prize. Our hope is that it will motivate individuals across the Commonwealth and beyond to use faith as a force for peace.” On the International Day of Peace in 2024, we officially launched the Commonwealth Peace Prize. The purpose of the prize is to honor peacebuilders who have demonstrated their ability to use faith-based principles to resolve conflicts and establish enduring peace within their communities. By celebrating these achievements, the prize aims to inspire broader engagement in peacebuilding efforts worldwide.
The Submission Process and Key Dates
Interested parties are encouraged to act promptly, as nominations will close on 17 January 2025. Official nominations must be submitted through a High Commission in London or a Commonwealth Accredited Organisation and include an official letter of recommendation and a comprehensive impact biography detailing the nominee’s contributions.
The Secretary-General will announce the winner during a special ceremony in Commonwealth Week, March 2025. The recipient will be presented with the Commonwealth Peace Prize, accompanied by a £50,000 financial award to further their vital peacebuilding work.
