Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Canadian actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has become the focus of an online controversy after speaking openly about her Tamil identity and her family’s Sri Lankan background. Ramakrishnan, best known for her role in Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, has repeatedly described herself as Canadian while also identifying strongly as an Eelam Tamil woman. Her comments have recently attracted renewed attention while she promotes her latest Netflix film, Best of the Best. Speaking on Hasan Minhaj’s podcast, Ramakrishnan said she was proud of being a Tamil Eelam woman and of her family and cultural history. She also discussed her efforts to learn Tamil, despite not being fluent in the language.

Maitreyi’s position was also reflected in the film. In one scene, her character Maya is assumed to be Indian. Maya responds that she is Tamil and that her family is from Sri Lanka. Ramakrishnan reportedly pushed for the wording to reflect how she personally understands her identity, rather than describing her simply as a “Tamil Sri Lankan.” That distinction appears to be at the centre of much of the online debate. Ramakrishnan’s parents came to Canada as refugees after fleeing the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. She has previously spoken about attending Tamil demonstrations with her family, including protests in Toronto during the final stages of the war in 2009.
Following her recent comments, some social-media accounts associated with Sinhala nationalist groups reportedly encouraged users to give Best of the Best one-star ratings on IMDb. Some posts also directed people to rate the film negatively without necessarily watching it. Ramakrishnan has meanwhile faced racist and misogynistic comments online. The controversy reflects a much wider debate within the Sri Lankan and Tamil diaspora over nationality, ethnicity and cultural identity. Some people believe her connection to Sri Lanka should be acknowledged when discussing her background. Others argue that she has the right to define her identity based on her own upbringing and family experience.
Ramakrishnan has maintained this position for several years. In 2019, after being cast in Never Have I Ever, she described herself as Tamil Canadian and said Canada was her country while Tamil culture remained an important part of her identity. Her experience highlights the complicated questions faced by second-generation immigrants, particularly those whose families left their homeland because of conflict. For Ramakrishnan, being Canadian and being Tamil are not contradictory identities. Her comments have instead reopened a sensitive conversation about how members of the diaspora understand and describe their roots.
