Why is it that Holidaymakers face being turned away?

There is nothing worse than booking your holiday just for it to be a disaster. But it seems like this is what’s going to happen to most of the brits that have already planned and paid for their holidays this year. Thousands of brits usually plan their holidays during the summer as they want to enjoy the weather but summer 2021 is not going to go as they planned.

There are only very few countries that have made into the British governments safe Green List to travel to, these countries are now prepping for a wave of British travelers over the summer. But things are not as they seem for these hotels are finding themselves with a shortage of staff and will not be able to operate to full capacity. This could mean that the holiday that was so carefully planned may not actually go as planned.

For the people that managed to secure the bookings they made would possibly have to pay out of pocket for the things that should have been free. Some providers are raising prices to offset the losses of operating at reduced capacity, while others are simply capitalizing on the high demand. In Hertfordshire, one campsite business, Cre8 Glamping, is charging up to £1,500 for a seven-night stay for two people in August, while in East Sussex, four people staying in a three-bedroom self-catering lodge at Chestnut Meadow Camping and Caravan Park can expect to pay more than £2,000 altogether.

Malcolm Bell, chief executive of Visit Cornwall had, until recently, predicted visitor numbers would be up to 15 per cent higher this summer than in 2019. Now he believes the county will be forced to turn away many would-be tourists because of reduced capacity. “We were expecting to be 10 to 15 per cent up on 2019 – now I think we’ll probably be nearer five per cent up due to staff shortages,” he said.
