Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Violence erupted during a protest outside a gurdwara in the northeast Calgary district of Alberta, Canada, resulting in at least two people being injured.

Calgary police were called to the scene when 50 to 100 individuals were engaged in a fight. Prior to the altercation, there were two separate calls for disturbances at the Dashmesh Culture Centre, where protesters clashed with the building’s occupants.

The first disturbance was reported around 1:15 pm, prompting officers to respond to protesters inside the building. Authorities worked to de-escalate the situation. Although no weapons were reportedly involved and no arrests were made, Calgary police have not disclosed details about the cause of the assault or any potential charges. The lack of information underscores the ongoing investigation’s sensitivity, leaving the public awaiting further updates on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Gurpartap Baidwan, one of the protest organizers, stated that the congregation gathered to oppose the elected leadership committee of the temple, citing bylaw violations and grievances. Baidwan asserted that the leadership was not adhering to the Sikh rehat maryada, the prescribed code of conduct issued by the Akal Takht for the Sikh community. This points to a divergence in adherence to established guidelines, sparking discussions and potential concerns within the Sikh community regarding the observance of traditional principles.

The ongoing protests, which started on December 24, center around concerns about the committee’s actions and their failure to communicate with protesters. The dispute centers around allegations of violations against Sikh principles and organizational bylaws, as stipulated by Alberta law for a non-profit organization. This legal dimension adds a regulatory aspect to the conflict, emphasizing the importance of adherence to established laws governing non-profit entities and underscoring the significance of aligning organizational practices with legal frameworks.
