Hotels (Commonwealth Union) _ Two Newport city councillors, Will Routley and Ray Mogford, are urging the city council to take decisive action in securing the future of the historically significant Westgate Hotel. The hotel played a central role in a political tumult in 1839 when Chartists marching to London clashed with authorities, demanding the release of prisoners. The conflict resulted in gunfire, leaving numerous dead or wounded, and the leaders of the Newport Rising were convicted of treason. Presently privately-owned, the building symbolizes a crucial moment in the struggle for democracy, displaying apparent bullet holes on its walls. Recent uncertainties have arisen regarding the hotel’s restoration, prompting the councillors to call on the local authority to intervene and safeguard its future.

In recent years, local initiatives have undertaken the refurbishment of the Westgate Hotel, aiming to preserve its historical significance and transform it into a community arts space for exhibitions and concerts. The hotel also became a focal point for successful grassroots efforts to collect clothing and essentials for Ukrainian refugees displaced by the Russian invasion in 2022. However, the group overseeing the hotel’s restoration recently announced an abrupt halt to its work, reporting the termination of its deal with the leaseholder.

Concerned about the uncertain future of the Westgate, Councillors Routley and Mogford plan to seek local government intervention. Their notice of motion emphasizes the historical importance of the Westgate Hotel as a turning point in advancing modern-day democracy and a reminder of struggles for political beliefs. The councillors are urging the council to utilize its authority to ensure the preservation of this historic building. They envision reclaiming the remarkable structure, preserving history, and contributing to a brighter future for the Westgate, the city, and its citizens. The fate of the Westgate Hotel will likely be a topic of discussion at the upcoming full council meeting.
