Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces, led by the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, launched a massive invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France, in a bold attempt to liberate Europe from the tyranny of Nazi regime. This monumental event, known as D-Day, marked a significant turning point in World War II and forever changed the course of history. The strategic planning and execution of D-Day was a monumental undertaking, requiring the coordination of thousands of troops, ships, and aircraft from multiple nations.

British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak delivered a passionate speech in marking the 80th anniversary of D Day while expressing his appreciation to the veterans attending the event and reminding them of the nation’s gratitude towards them.

The PM pointed out that eighty years ago, the weather cleared, and the greatest invasion force in history left the shores of Britain to liberate Europe.

He then stated that they were gathered to remember the sacrifice of the tens of thousands who never made it home.

In honoring the service of those who did return, he mentioned men like Ken Cooke who at 18 years old, had never been on a boat or a beach before.

Sunak gave further accounts of other brave soldiers in the speech and said “You risked everything. And we owe you everything.”

“We cannot possibly hope to repay that debt.”

“But we can – and we must – pledge never to forget.”

“After the war, many of you dedicated your lives to telling the story of what happened here.”

The operation was originally set for May 1, 1944, but was delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions. It was finally launched on June 6, with General Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces. The invasion of Normandy began with an extensive air and naval bombardment of German defenses, followed by the landing of thousands of soldiers on the beaches. The Allies faced fierce resistance from the German forces, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides.

However, the determination and bravery of the Allied troops ultimately prevailed, and the German defenses were gradually overwhelmed. D-Day was a pivotal moment in the war, as it marking a significant on the attack against the German occupation of Europe. The successful invasion of Normandy paved the way for the liberation of France and the subsequent invasion of Germany, ultimately leading to the downfall of the Nazi regime. On the Eastern front of the War the Soviet Union which is now Russia played a significant role in war against the Nazi regime.
