World’s largest coal exporters team up on….

-

Australia (Common Wealth) _As the two coal powerhouses concluded off bilateral talks centered on clean energy, Indonesia’s president encouraged Australia to assist it in ramping up EV production.

President Joko Widodo met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Sydney, where they discussed the region’s rising tensions.

The world’s two largest thermal coal exporters, Indonesia and Australia, are eager to reduce their economic reliance on polluting fossil fuels.

Both leaders agreed that clean energy technology should be prioritized. “Indonesia and Australia must build a more substantive and strategic economic cooperation through joint production of EV batteries,” Widodo stated after the meeting.

Widodo’s administration has lofty goals for Indonesia’s EV production, including making better use of the country’s large natural cobalt and nickel deposits. To do so, it would need to guarantee a consistent supply of Australian lithium, another important component of rechargeable batteries.

Australia provides about half of the world’s lithium, the great bulk of which is now exported to China for processing. According to Albanese, Australia has a lot to offer Indonesia and the region in terms of energy transition, including the worldwide shift toward EVs.

He was optimistic that they have all of the components and expertise required for renewable energy. Widodo was received by Albanese at Admiralty House, a huge government structure with stunning views of Sydney’s scenic bay.

Canberra has joined the historic Australia-United Kingdom-US (AUKUS) security treaty, procuring nuclear-powered submarines to boost its naval strength in the South Pacific.

Indonesia has taken a more neutral stance, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and regional stability. Albanese and Widodo agreed on the necessity of sustaining stability.

According to Albanese, all countries in the region, great and small, share a mutual obligation to keep the region peaceful. Widodo stressed the importance of “collaboration and concrete cooperation” among Asia-Pacific countries.

According to Gatra Priyandita of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Indonesia is gradually warming to the AUKUS coalition. However, there is a growing willingness to regard AUKUS as a source of opportunity for Indonesia’s future security partnership with Australia.
