Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for enhanced solidarity and cooperation between China and South Africa as both countries embark on a “new era and a new journey” of bilateral relations. President Xi made these remarks during his talks with visiting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is in Beijing for the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and a state visit.

President Xi emphasized the strong and high-level ties between China and South Africa, noting that he has visited South Africa more than any other African country. He highlighted the significance of President Ramaphosa being the first African head of state to make a state visit to China before the FOCAC summit. “This once again demonstrates the high-level bilateral ties and friendship between the two countries,” Xi said.

He further noted that 2024 marks two significant anniversaries: the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 30th anniversary of the new South Africa. Xi stressed that despite changes in the international landscape, the commitment of China and South Africa to modernization, China-Africa cooperation, and improved global governance has remained unchanged.

In his remarks, Xi Jinping underscored the need for unity and deeper cooperation between the two nations. He asserted, “In a new era and on a new journey, greater unity and cooperation between China and South Africa meet the expectations of the two peoples.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa echoed Xi’s sentiments, reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to the one-China policy and expressing strong support for mutually beneficial cooperation. “I reaffirmed that our political rapport and relationship is a foundation of an unwavering and valuable friendship,” Ramaphosa stated. “Our two countries share many common objectives. Building on the firm foundation of solidarity, we continue to provide support and promote our interests.”

The 2024 FOCAC summit provides a crucial platform for China and African nations to discuss and plan future cooperation. The talks between Xi and Ramaphosa ahead of the summit underline the significance of China-South Africa relations and their shared vision for a strengthened partnership.

The meeting also highlights the importance of diplomatic engagements and policy alignment between China and South Africa. It reflects their collective commitment to fostering stronger bilateral ties and collaboration, not only for their mutual benefit but also for broader China-Africa relations and global governance.

The meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Cyril Ramaphosa sets the tone for a new chapter in China-South Africa relations. As both countries celebrate significant anniversaries, they are poised to reinforce their partnership through enhanced cooperation, mutual support, and a shared commitment to global development. The reaffirmation of the one-China policy by South Africa further consolidates the political foundation for this relationship, which continues to thrive on the principles of mutual respect and common aspirations.
