Canada _ (Commonwealth Union) _ Something is obviously wrong when the Canadian Pacific Railway train travels down the rails in Calgary. The expected size and appearance are present, but the diesel engine’s deep rumbling sounds is not present.

Instead, this locomotive is propelled by battery and hydrogen fuel cell technology as part of an experiment by the railway to see whether the low-emission cars are sturdy and dependable enough to maybe one day transform operations at the corporation.

The potential of hydrogen to decarbonize several sectors, aid nations in achieving their climate objectives, and improve energy systems along the way has come under more and more attention in recent years. The expected size and appearance are present, but the diesel engine’s deep rumbling sounds is not present. According to analysts, the next 12 months will be crucial in determining if that vision can realistically become a reality in the near future or if it will only exist in people’s minds for decades to come.

There is anticipation in the Canadian business for what 2023 will bring as a number of demonstration projects are scheduled to be completed and work will also start on a sizable new hydrogen manufacturing facility.

To enable the Alberta Motor Transport Association to test semi-trucks on the state’s roadways, a hydrogen fueling station is being built near Edmonton. This year, the group hopes to give local businesses the chance to test out up to four different truck types.

According to David Layzell, an energy systems architect with the Transition Accelerator, a non-profit group established to aid Canada in achieving its climate targets, and professor emeritus of biological sciences at the University of Calgary, “the next 12 months is primarily a proof of concept.”
