Anthony Joshua, who is from Britain, is an undefeated two-time former world heavyweight boxing champion who has successfully defended his title three times. Recently, he was hospitalised in a stable condition on Monday after being involved in a car crash in Nigeria that killed two people who were close friends and team members, his promoter said.

A chauffeur driving boxer Anthony Joshua during a fatal crash has appeared in court in Nigeria. The accident claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close friends and colleagues.

The driver, Adeniyi Kayode, 46, was previously charged with four crimes, including causing death by dangerous driving. He appeared at Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State on Tuesday, although the hearing was adjourned until 25 February after prosecutors requested more time to seek legal advice.

Kayode arrived at court wearing a black hoodie, black trousers and black shoes. He did not speak during the brief hearing. He had previously been released from custody after being granted bail of five million naira (about $3,500). The crash occurred on 29 December near Lagos, when the Lexus SUV Joshua was travelling in collided with a stationary lorry on the busy Lagos-Ibadan motorway. Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength coach, Sina Ghami, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The 36-year-old Joshua survived the crash and received hospital treatment for his injuries before his discharge two days later.

Images shared after the accident showed Joshua being helped from the wreckage by emergency responders. In the days that followed, the former heavyweight world champion paid tribute to Ayodele and Ghami in an emotional Instagram post, describing them as “great men” and reflecting on the bond they shared. He also acknowledged the profound pain their families were experiencing. Joshua was travelling to Sagamu, a town in Ogun State where he has family roots, to visit relatives for New Year celebrations. A family member told the BBC he was looking forward to spending time with loved ones.

Kayode now faces charges including death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s licence. The case is expected to resume later this month.
