Northern Mozambique’s Financial Divide: The Battle to Connect Millions to the Digital Economy

With the passing of time, mobile phones connect people to various financial as well as commercial services everywhere in the world. However, some areas in Northern Mozambique still suffer from isolation, which hampers both development and the financial independence of the local communities. According to a newly released study, published on July 20, 2026, the situation had not improved significantly in the past years, and people living in the northern provinces of Mozambique still lack access to banks, various digital payment systems, and other financial means of information exchange.

To access banking services, the locals living in Northern Mozambique often have to travel long distances. For numerous persons out there, it requires enormous amounts of time, for example, hours or even the entire day, to reach a bank or any other financial institution simply due to poorly developed infrastructure in that region.

This situation is especially important at present because financial inclusion starts to be treated as one of the most significant aspects of development. Indeed, digital banking and mobile money have indeed transformed the way people receive payments, manage their businesses, and access essential services worldwide. how people are paid, run their businesses and seek major services around the globe. Still, northern Mozambique struggles with the unfavourable geography, insecurity, insufficient infrastructure, and inadequate digital connectivity that continue to create a financial gap.

Mozambique has been progressing in improving access to finance through mobile network channels. Indeed, according to the financial inclusion indicators released on 17 July, 2026, by Banco de Moçambique, the country has managed to grow in terms of mobile money agents and banking points. However, the report notes that the situation varies by region and between urban and rural populations.

The situation in the northern provinces indicates significantly more serious problems. In this part of the country the population has experienced a prolonged period of violence and instability due to the activities of insurgents, which has affected economic development, displaced the local communities and deterred investments in the region. Besides, experts from international financial institutions express concern about the security situation and infrastructure problems that remain inconvenient for the development of Mozambique.

The repercussions of this situation can be severe. Without access to financial services, entrepreneurs cannot run their businesses, and farmers cannot obtain loans for essential farm equipment. In fact, when people do not have easy access to funds, their problems greatly increase.

Nevertheless, we should not forget about the possibility provided by the digital finance sector, which is on the rise in Mozambique. The development of mobile money platforms and agent banking may lead to improvements in telecommunication networks. Thus, remote communities will be able to establish a connection with the rest of the world; however, proper financial investments should be used for that.

Generally speaking, Mozambique’s financial situation is more complicated than just opening new branches of banks. The country needs to connect its citizens to the new economy.

The policymakers should therefore address the issue of how the northern part of Mozambique can be developed from a total financial desert.
