Leaving the global reggae community in sudden shock and mourning, Stephan “Cat” Coore, who is a founding member as well as a force behind the iconic and legendary Jamaican band Third World, passed away on January 18th of 2026 at the age of 69. His powerful musical legacy reached way beyond Jamaica.

Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, described Coore as “The Reggae Ambassador,”, praising his extraordinary talent and his role in spreading Jamaican music and culture around the world. She didn’t forget to express her deep condolences to his family and highlighted his contribution to timeless hits such as Reggae Ambassador, Now That We Found Love, 96 Degrees in the Shade, and Try Jah Love.

Coore was also honoured by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who described him as a “cultural ambassador in the truest sense.” His contributions enhanced Jamaica’s national identity and served as an inspiration to artists of all ages. Both the government and the opposition recognised his influence, highlighting how Coore had contributed to introducing Jamaican rhythm and spirit to a worldwide audience.

Coore started his musical career at a young age. He was born on April 6, 1956, and showed remarkable musical ability from an early age. Not only a skilled guitarist, but he was also classically trained on the cello, an unusual combination that became a defining feature of Third World’s sophisticated reggae‑fusion sound. Before forming Third World in 1973, Coore was part of the successful reggae group Inner Circle. He helped them to shape the early sound of Jamaican music.

Over more than five decades, Third World became one of Jamaica’s longest‑running and most successful bands, blending reggae with soul, funk, pop, and rock. Underneath Coore’s musical direction, the group achieved international acclaim and earned nine Grammy nominations, the United Nations Medal of Peace, and numerous other accolades.

The fans, who are pouring in their tributes, are not the only ones whose hearts he has touched, as one can see. Fellow artists and cultural leaders around the world also contributed to conveying their deepest sympathies. Jamaican artists, including Sean Paul and Jesse Royal, shared heartfelt messages, making sure to celebrate Coore’s mentorship as well as his creative influence on the evolution of reggae. Many noted that Coore’s warm personality as well as generosity made him both a cultural giant and a beloved figure within the music community.

Coore was also deeply involved in philanthropy. He served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Issa Trust Foundation, supporting healthcare initiatives for children, and advocated for environmental causes through his work with the Alligator Head Foundation.

His passing comes at a poignant moment for reggae, coming shortly after the death of fellow legend Jimmy Cliff, which marked a sombre period for Caribbean music. Cliff, known globally for The Harder They Come, died at age 81 in late 2025, and Coore’s death soon after has intensified reflection on reggae’s heritage and lasting influence.

Even though the music world is wrestling and fighting with these losses, new voices and celebrations continue to shape reggae in 2026. Festivals and events which are honouring reggae culture, such as the Reggae Therapy Festival in Martinique, are set to highlight both legacy and emerging artists. The genre’s global reach appears as strong as ever, with dedicated fans around the world celebrating its rhythms, messages, and cultural significance.

Coore leaves behind his wife, Lisa; his children, Shiah, Kanna, Stephen, and Ashley; and his grandchildren. As tributes continue, fans and fellow musicians alike affirm that his sound and the spirit of reggae he helped carry worldwide will live on for generations. And his legendary presence will continue to live on, and his mark will forever remain imprinted on this world even as years continue to pass by.
