In our answering affidavit filed recently, we have formally responded to the most recent court application by Wesley Neumann and a large number of critical concerns regarding stability and safety at Heathfield High School. Our submission highlights that the time in the lead-up to Mr Neumann’s departure was characterised by a number of unrests, including frequent protests, early school closures and high levels of learner absenteeism.
It also appears that a small number of teachers actively encouraged learners not to attend classes and unauthorised supporters entered the premises and held meetings with staff and students. Previously intimidated or fearful, some staff have now come forward to report feeling bullied by these supporters.
Beyond social disruption, curator principals appointed by the department identified serious financial irregularities during Mr Neumann’s tenure, and subsequent investigations have uncovered prima facie evidence supporting these allegations, suggesting a lack of fiscal oversight during his leadership.
The disruptive behaviour persists to date, as, for instance, on January 30, 2026, supporters handed out pamphlets to learners across schools, notifying them of Mr. Neumann’s return. This caused undue stress for the student population, most of whom have never even heard of Mr Neumann. His own supporters have admitted to the media that there is a risk that his return may escalate disruptions in the community. The teachers are genuinely concerned because, from their perspective, they see it as debilitating for the children.
The current phase in the journey at Heathfield High School is that of recovery and growth. Under its new management, the school is flourishing, having recorded the highest matric pass rate in the last 15 years at 89.9%. We must ensure that pending legal issues never cause learners to relapse into instability.
It is worth reminding all parties involved that interfering with school discipline is a punishable offence under Section 3 (7) of the South African Schools Act. “We will not allow any form of interference in the right to education at Heathfield High.”
