India (Commonwealth Union) — India had a proud moment at the 2026 BAFTA Awards when the Manipuri-language film Boong won Best Children’s & Family Film. The moving story, supported by producer and actor Farhan Akhtar, surpassed major international contenders such as Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2. The victory is being hailed as a watershed moment for Indian cinema, particularly for films from the Northeast, which have historically received limited global mainstream exposure. It demonstrates how authentic, locally rooted stories can resonate with audiences across national boundaries.

Akhtar attended the ceremony with his wife, Shibani Dandekar, and described the moment as deeply meaningful. Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong is an emotional coming-of-age story set in Manipur during a period of social and political strain. The word “Boong” translates to “little boy” in Manipuri. The film centres on a young boy, played by Gugun Kipgen, who dreams of reuniting his fractured family. He believes that finding his missing father will restore happiness to his mother, Mandakini, portrayed by Bala Hijam.

Accompanied by his loyal friend Raju, played by Angom Sanamatum, the boy embarks on a journey to the border town of Moreh. His search eventually takes him across the border into Myanmar, as he follows hope and determination despite uncertainty and danger. India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the National Film Development Corporation welcomed the BAFTA win, calling it a proud moment for the country. In a joint statement, they said the award reflects the growing global appreciation for India’s diverse and meaningful storytelling traditions.

Akhtar, who backed the film from its early stages, shared his gratitude after the win. He said he felt honoured to see the film recognised on such a prestigious stage and thanked the jury for acknowledging the team’s efforts. He added that the award would inspire many aspiring storytellers back home. Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the cast and crew. He described the win as a moment of immense pride, particularly for Manipur, and praised the creative talent found across the nation.
The film wrapped production in Manipur in 2023, just before ethnic strife erupted in the region. Since then, hundreds of people have died, and many others have been displaced. Against this backdrop, Boong serves as a poignant reminder of resilience and optimism. Before its theatrical release in September 2025, the film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. It was later screened at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the Warsaw International Film Festival, where it received positive feedback from both international critics and audiences.
