Singapore (Commonwealth Union)_ The future of Komala Vilas, a beloved Indian vegetarian eatery in Singapore, is now in question. The restaurant, a popular landmark in Little India, has been closed for almost two months, leaving customers and the community wondering what’s next. Situated on Serangoon Road, Komala Vilas has been a go-to spot for both residents and visitors. Celebrated for its authentic South Indian cuisine served on banana leaves, the restaurant has enjoyed a solid reputation for 75 years. But since January 19th, a notice has indicated that the closure is for renovations. No reopening date has been announced.

Despite the explanation, many have begun to wonder whether the closure is temporary or permanent. Additionally, online comments have increased in recent weeks, particularly when visitors reported seeing no obvious traces of refurbishment at the site. The absence of updates has further increased the uncertainty. Concerns were heightened when a post on a travel-focused Facebook group revealed that the restaurant was still displayed as open on digital maps, despite having been shuttered for weeks. Others who encountered similar situations responded to the post, with some expressing regret after making the trek only to discover the shutters were down.

Regular customers have now moved to internet review sites, leaving comments about when the eatery would reopen. For many, Komala Vilas is more than just a restaurant; it is a vital part of Singapore’s cultural fabric and a symbol of the Indian community’s presence in the country. Murugiah Rajoo began the restaurant in 1947, and it has been a family business for generations. His grandson, Rajakumar Gunasekaran, currently runs it. Over the years, the business has evolved into a landmark, drawing people from all over the world.

Its reputation reached an international stage in 2015 when Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi dined there together, an event that was widely remembered as a moment of “dosa diplomacy.” The restaurant has also hosted other notable guests, including foreign dignitaries. Komala Vilas has been officially recognised as a heritage business by the National Heritage Board, which highlights long-standing establishments that contribute to the country’s cultural identity. This status makes its prolonged closure even more significant.
To add to the ambiguity, its neighboring sister establishment, a sweets and savouries shop, has also halted operations and is now listed as permanently closed online. Attempts to contact management for clarification have so far been futile. According to industry officials, the restaurant is now being renovated, but they are also expecting additional details. For the time being, the stillness surrounding Komala Vilas has left many hoping that the legendary restaurant would reopen and carry on its heritage, rather than silently fade away.
