From Quiet Runways to Global Skies: How Singapore Flying College Is Redefining Tamworth’s Aviation Future

The newly opened Singapore Flying College in Tamworth is also a vital piece of the global positioning map for Australian aviation. In addition to connecting New South Wales with one of the most trusted airline networks in the world, the flight training school was launched on April 2, 2022, by Premier Chris Minns of QLD, the President of Flight Operations for Singapore Airlines and Chairman of the Singapore Flying College Captain Eugene Antoni, and Mayor Russell Webb from the Tamworth Regional Council.

The opening of the training center in Tamworth is more than just a business expansion for Tamworth. According to Premier Minns, the Singapore Flying College represents that the NSW region can attract large international investments and confirms the addition of a purpose built training facility gives Tamworth the status as one of Australia’s best training centers for pilots. Not only will the establishment of the center create additional jobs that require skilled personnel, it will provide long-lasting economic advantage to the Tamworth region. Premier Minns closed his remarks about the opening of the school with a strong message; “This isn’t just a school but an anchor for continued aviation development for the City of Tamworth.”

As Singapore Airlines continues on its path to grow, Captain Anthony said that it will add a location in Tamworth as a strength to its pilot training capabilities, both through greater capacity and an outstanding learning environment for its cadets. This site is an important extension to the operational capabilities of Singapore Flying College in Jandakot, Western Australia. Since 1993, Jandakot has served as the primary training base for pilots being trained by SIA Group. The Tamworth site is set to be gradually increased in size over the next 5 years, which means SIA Group considers the city to be an important part of its long term strategy rather than a stopgap measure or satellite training base.

The statistical information supports this assertion: The first class of Singapore Airlines cadets began training at the new site in April 2025, with 20 successfully completing this stage of their training in 2025. By the end of 2025, 32 cadets will have successfully finished training at the Tamworth site, with another 30 still finishing their training. To address this pipeline issue, Singapore Flying College has hired established instructors and obtained four Cessna 172 aircraft, one Cessna 172 flight simulator and completely refurbished housing accommodations to provide the above-mentioned training capabilities as well as a properly designed and cohesive learning environment for Tamworth cadets.

In addition to its new facilities, Tamworth Regional Airport has many benefits including a dedicated training runway, access to two adjacent sealed runway airports, hours of operation supported by 24/7 Air Traffic Control and Instrument Landing System on the main runway. Mayor Webb stated that the 300+ days of favourable flying conditions each year in the region provide an excellent opportunity for cadets to build flying time and gain confidence in their flying abilities. He also emphasized that there is no better environment than a regional airport (compared to a congested metropolitan airport) to serve as an excellent training environment for future airline pilots.

The shift towards Tamworth being able to support the new regional airline education model is a key and important shift within the aviation industry as airlines are exploring options beyond major metropolitan airports in terms of infrastructure, reliability of terrain and weather so that they can provide continuous learning opportunities for their future employees. Therefore, Tamworth’s relationship with Singapore Airlines is an example of a regional airport offering adequate resources for global airline training that will allow for long-term growth and development. This partnership could also have a significant impact on the local and regional economy and cadets on their future career paths in aviation.
