India (Commonwealth Union)_ Payal Nag has given India a reason to celebrate, and it’s about more than just her athletic achievements. At the age of eighteen, she etched her name in history as the world’s first archery champion without limbs, delivering a remarkable game at the World Para Archery Series Final in Bangkok in April 2026. In her debut at a senior international competition, Payal outperformed her idol, Sheetal Devi, in a closely contested match, winning the gold medal with a score of 139–136. It was a pressure-packed battle, yet Payal kept her composure, demonstrating incredible focus in her game.

Payal’s path to this point has been a difficult journey. Payal was born in Odisha to a daily wage laborer, and her life altered radically when she was eight years old. A horrific electrical accident claimed all four of her limbs. For many, such a setback would have ruined all hopes for a regular life, including an athletic career. But for Payal, it was the start of a new journey. Her talent first came to light through a viral video that showed her painting using her mouth. That clip caught the attention of coach Kuldeep Kumar Vedwan, who recognised her determination and potential. He brought her to his academy in Katra, where her journey in archery began.

With no standard method available, Payal had to develop her own unique technique. Unlike other para archers, she uses a specially designed prosthetic support to hold the bow steady. She draws the string using her shoulder and mouth with the help of a customised trigger mechanism. It took time and persistence to master, but today, she performs with confidence and precision. Interestingly, her win in Bangkok was not the first time she had beaten Sheetal Devi. She had previously edged past her at the 2025 Para Archery Nationals in Jaipur. However, this victory on the international stage carried far greater significance.

The emotional highlight came after the final. As the national anthem played and Payal received her medal, Sheetal stood beside her, offering quiet support by helping move her wheelchair. It was an impressive demonstration of respect and sportsmanship from two excellent athletes. Coach Vedwan is the driving force behind their success, having turned both archers into champions through devotion and belief. Despite limited resources, his efforts contributed significantly to their success. India’s overall success at the event mirrored its hard effort, as the team finished first in the standings. Payal’s story, on the other hand, stands out as a powerful reminder of persistence, resilience, and the capacity to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges and achieve incredible success.
