An official partnership between Samoa and eleven other countries in the Pacific region to roll out an extensive program addressing the challenges of rising incidences of cybercrime, internet fraud, and digital abuse impacting their populations has been established as a means to provide protection for all the nations in the region. An inaugural Regional Cyber Safety Outreach Program has now been initiated with the aim of creating awareness, providing education, and promoting safety when using the internet and mobile technology for residents of the Pacific Island nations involved.

The launch of this historic program took place at the TATTE convention center and brought together representatives from eleven Pacific nations, including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands, to create what many observers are calling one of the best-coordinated digital security campaigns in the Pacific so far.

Authorities provide examples of how cybercrime is on a rapid increase, as cybercriminals are using fake social media accounts to target at-risk people who use the internet. They also describe many of the various ways in which they steal people’s identities, invade their privacy, commit financial fraud against them, and involve them in drug-related networks through their use of the internet. The program is designed to not only help strengthen cyber policing but also to educate at-risk communities before the threats presented by online activity become larger social issues.

The keynote speakers, including the Prime Minister of Samoa (La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polāta’ivao Fosi Schmidt) and the Australian Deputy High Commissioner (Simon Dawkins), added to the diplomatic and symbolic significance of the launch event.

In addition to honoring the 15-year legacy of Cyber Safety Pasifika—widely recognized for its pioneering cyber awareness campaigns within the Pacific Islands—numerous faith leaders, youth advocates, and community organizations also participated in the ceremony. The attendees have expressed that cybersecurity has become not only an emerging topic in society but also a critical factor in relation to social, ethical, and national security as Pacific Islands work toward ensuring their continued sustainability in the future.
