MANAMA, August 13, 2026 – The two countries are establishing even closer ties as they mark more than 200 years of formal relations, with a strong emphasis on security. The security agreement, the UK engagement in regional security schemes, and investment of billions of pounds are the key components of the strategic alliance, which is further strengthened by the permanent presence of British Navy forces in five ports of Bahrain.
Assurances with respect to the historical friendship have been provided by the Kingdom of Bahrain and the UK. Their relations have been translated into efforts to address defence and military issues. Overall, they developed from a historical partnership to a modern-day strategic partnership that runs in accordance with the priorities of security, maritime trade and stability in the region.
Bahrain’s formal ties with Britain began with an initial maritime peace treaty in February 1820. The relationship evolved through an 1861 Perpetual Truce that established British defence and foreign relations oversight, followed by exclusive agreements in 1880 and 1892 that formalised its protectorate status, lasting until independence on August 15, 1971 (formally celebrated on December 16).
Such remarkable historical developments help illuminate why today’s cooperation holds significant strategic importance. Currently, Britain has a considerable naval presence in Bahrain, with its largest naval facility lying outside of Britain, securing London’s crucial presence near many of the most important maritime routes for trade and energy.
Bilateral economic ties between the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka have grown, supported by trade policy updates. Official UK trade data reports total bilateral trade reaching £1.7 billion for the four quarters leading to early 2026, reflecting a 9.7% increase from the prior period.
The timing of the event is noteworthy. In May 2026, the United Kingdom and the council of GCC members signed an important agreement to establish a free trade agreement with each other, which will perhaps kick off some new chapter in the trade relationship of Britain with Bahrain and its neighbours in the Gulf region.
Bahrain and Britain show how a relationship that began over 200 years ago is far from finished and is simply being proactively refreshed through treaties signed in the imperial epoch, naval cooperation, investment and new security structures.
