India (Commonwealth Union)_ India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the main ceremony at the historic Red Fort in New Delhi. This year’s celebrations centre on the theme “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047”, highlighting the role of young Indians in helping the country become a developed nation by 2047. The celebrations also mark 150 years of Vande Mataram, the national song that inspired people during India’s freedom struggle. The programme combines traditional ceremonies with performances and activities highlighting India’s achievements in technology, space, defence, science, innovation and green energy.

Customary events at the Red Fort
President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on August 14, ahead of Independence Day. On August 15, the traditional ceremony at the Red Fort marks the arrival of the Prime Minister, the singing of Vande Mataram, the hoisting of the National Flag and the Prime Minister’s address to the nation. The programme also includes patriotic performances by students and cultural groups. Additionally, tributes will be paid to freedom fighters and those who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for independence.
Theme and honouring the youth
Youth achievement will have a central place in this year’s celebrations. Nineteen students who won medals at the 2026 International Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematical Olympiads have been invited to attend the ceremony and will be seated on the rampart. Visual displays will highlight India’s progress in nuclear and space technology. Floral decorations around the Guard of Honour area will also present the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat@2047.

Band performances across India
Patriotic band performances have been organised across the country from August 8 to August 15. Bands from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, NCC and several central security and police forces will perform at 343 prominent locations. The performances are open to the public and are intended to create a strong sense of national pride while bringing the Independence Day celebrations closer to communities across India.
Honouring Vande Mataram
A major attraction at the Red Fort is the tribute to 150 years of Vande Mataram. Around 2,500 NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers will form the words “Vande Mataram” on Gyanpath. An Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter will carry a banner marking the anniversary and shower flower petals over the gathering. Vande Mataram will be sung when the Prime Minister arrives, followed by the flag hoisting and his customary address.
Special guests and community participation
Around 5,000 special guests from different walks of life have been invited. They include entrepreneurs, innovators, grassroots workers and others contributing to the country’s development. More than 1,500 Delhi-based guests from different states and Union Territories, dressed in traditional clothing, will also attend.
Swachhta campaign after the celebrations
The celebrations will be followed by a cleanliness campaign at the Red Fort involving NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers. The initiative will focus on plogging and clearing waste after spectators leave, reinforcing the message of Swachh Bharat.

Across India, Independence Day will be marked at schools, homes, offices, villages, municipalities and public institutions. Flag hoisting, the national anthem, speeches, parades, cultural programmes and tributes will remain central to the celebrations.
History
India became independent on August 15, 1947, after nearly two centuries of British rule. The freedom movement was shaped by leaders and revolutionaries including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh. Since independence, the Red Fort has remained the centre of the Prime Minister’s annual Independence Day address and flag-hoisting ceremony.
