Sean Grayson, the former US police officer convicted of killing Sonya Massey, has died in prison at the age of 32. Grayson shot Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, at her home in Springfield, Illinois, in July 2024.
Massey had called the police because she believed someone had broken into her home. Grayson was one of the officers sent to check on the situation. The incident quickly turned violent. Body camera footage from the police later showed what happened inside Massey’s home.
The officers spoke with Massey about a pot of hot water on her stove. At first, the conversation appeared calm. Massey and Grayson even seemed to laugh during the exchange. The situation then changed. Massey said, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” twice. Grayson became frustrated and warned her not to throw the hot water.
He then pulled out his gun. Massey apologised and ducked. Grayson fired three shots. One of the bullets hit Massey in the face. Grayson later said he believed Massey was going to throw boiling water at him. Prosecutors argued that he had no reason to shoot her.
The shooting caused widespread anger across the US. Protests were held in several cities. The case also renewed discussions about police violence and the treatment of Black Americans by law enforcement.
Grayson was fired from the police department after the shooting. He was first charged with first-degree murder. However, a jury later found him guilty of second-degree murder.
He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Grayson had also been suffering from colon cancer. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2023 and received treatment while in prison.
His lawyers recently tried to have him released because of his medical condition. The request was denied. Daniel Fultz, Grayson’s lawyer, confirmed that Grayson died on Sunday. He did not say what caused his death.
The Illinois Department of Corrections has been asked for more information. Lawyers for Massey’s family said Grayson’s death does not bring Sonya back. They also offered sympathy to his family. But they said Massey’s loved ones will continue to live with the pain of losing her.
The case received national attention after then-President Joe Biden said Massey “should be alive today.”Massey’s death continues to be remembered as a major case in the debate over police use of force in the US.
