Brexit deal what it means to the people

Trade

  • No tariffs on trade.
  • No quotas.
  • Customs checks will be in place starting next year.
  • “Lock in market access” may affect the financial sector, but this remains unclear.
  • Professional qualifications, including that of doctors and nurses, will not be recognised automatically.

Travel

  • British travellers staying in the EU for over 90 days will require over a 180 day period, will require visa
  • British travellers will continue to have access to emergency healthcare in the EU, while European Health Insurance Cards will be valid until their expiration.
  • EU pet passports are no longer valid.
  • The EU and UK will coordinate “fair and transparent rates for international mobile roaming” but increased rates may apply.

Fishing

  • The UK will have full control over its waters.
  • EU fishing boats will be allowed to fish in British waters for several years.
  • 25 percent of fish caught by EU fishing boats will be handed to the UK. This will be phased in over roughly 5 years.
  • The EU and UK will continue to have regular negotiations over fishing access.

European Court of Justice

  • The jurisdiction of the court and its precedents will no longer apply to the UK.

Security

  • The UK will be provided access to the bloc’s security databases upon request only.
  • UK will no longer be a part of European law enforcement agency, Europol, but will maintain a presence at its headquarters.

University Education

  • The Erasmus scheme will no longer apply to UK students. A new scheme is expected to replace it.
  • Students from universities in Northern Ireland will continue to use the Erasmus scheme under an agreement with the Irish government.
