Development of a ‘digital dollar’ underway

WASHINGTON (CU)_The Digital Dollar Project announced on Monday (3 May) that it is set to launch several pilot programmes in order to generate data that could assist US policy makers to develop a digital dollar for the first time.

The five private-sector pilots, which will be launched over the next 12 months, will be initially funded by Accenture Plc and would later involve financial institutions, retailers and other enterprises. Accordingly, the Digital Dollar Project, which was created last year by the Digital Dollar Foundation, in partnership with Accenture, is expected to test the potential uses of a US central bank digital currency (CBDC).
