Tearing down gender disparities in Africa’s neurosurgery

MTHATHA, Eastern Cape (CU)_Neurosurgery has historically been a male-dominated field, while gender disparities in this area continue to persist even today, particularly in the African continent. A research published by the Journal of Neurosurgery earlier this year, revealed that there are only about 243 women involved in this discipline across the continent. Therefore, it was not an easy journey for Dr Ncumisa Jilata, whose childhood ambition was to become a chartered accountant. However, many years later, the feeling of holding a glass in your hand, sipping a cold drink, with a rush of thirst-quenching pleasure, was a visual image offered by Jilata’s Grade 11 biology teacher, which was the starting point of her life-long love of neurons.
