(CU)_On 9 August 1956, thousands of women in South Africa staged a march on the Union Buildings of Pretoria and staged a protest against the amendments to the Urban Areas Act, a piece of legislation enacted to severely limit the movements of the black African populace during the Apartheid era. It is believed that over 20,000 women, from various backgrounds and cultures, including Whites, Blacks, Coloureds and Indians, some carrying children on their backs, some wearing traditional dresses and other clothed in their domestic outfits.
