Toronto, Canada (CU)_ The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) awarded Trident Medical Center with a top grade for the second time in a row for its excellency in the open-heart surgery program. Trident Medical Center announced the news and expressed delight over the accomplishment. Based on coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) operation results, Trident Medical Center is placed in the top 10% of participating hospitals across the United States and Canada.
Surgeon James Benner, M.D. expressed pride over the achievement and stated that it was challenging during the Covid times. He said, “To earn the STS’s highest ranking for the second consecutive year during the time COVID dominated healthcare is a testament to our focus on providing high-quality care to patients needing increasingly complex medical care”.
Benner works for Palmetto Cardiovascular and Thoracic Associates Trident Health as a surgeon. Benner added about the service delivery of the hospital. He said, “For open-heart surgery patients in the Lowcountry and beyond who need a CABG procedure, the rating means that the care they receive at Trident Medical Center is among the best of the best”.
Karen Gersch, MD, FACS, FACC, a prominant cardiothoracic surgeon, also works for Palmetto Cardiovascular and Thoracic Associates Trident Health. Gersch attributed the success to the teamwork and other major clinicians and staff of the hospital. He said, “The recognition is truly an indication of exceptional teamwork and the team’s consistent attention to detail in every case. Dr. Benner and I are the lead surgeons, but there’s a large group of other physicians and clinicians who share in this success”.
Trident Medical Center is a 445-bed hospital based in Charleston, SC. Operating in one of the rapidly growing regions in the country, the hospital serves over 65,000 patients in its ER annually and conducts over 4,000 surgeries. The hospital is also named as a Level ll Trauma Center and offers better cardiac treatment and robotic surgery than any other hospital in the region.
