UK (Commonwealth Union) – With high inflation and rising energy costs, the push for sustainable models in transport has never been greater. Researchers at the University College London (UCL) will play a major part in furthering the path towards zero-emission transport via a new partnership with Japanese manufacturer HORIBA.
HORIBA is set to fund its new Chair in Advanced Propulsion Technologies and two PhD students to conduct activities within the UCL Advanced Propulsion Lab (APL), that is to be located at UCL. The lab will have its primary focus on decarbonization of the transport sector, where battery and fuel cell electric vehicles will be key. The partnership of UCL and HORIBA will pave the way for the development and advocacy of new, more productive propulsion technologies for EVs and train the next generation of engineers for the industry.
The APL will produce greener and more sustainable battery and fuel cell technologies to take the step towards a carbon-free future. It hopes to bring in the best facilities of the globe to test vehicle propulsion, fuel cells and batteries, which is a significant technology for zero-emission vehicles.
The APL is set to become the 1st research center across the globe to produce electrochemical technologies which are implemented and applied to a wide variety of mobility and transport modes. This will continue the leading research happening at the UCL Electrochemical Innovation Lab (EIL), with more than 70 experts in electrochemical energy storage and power conversion.

I am grateful to HORIBA for their support for the work of the APL and their commitment to working with us to lead this global transformation,” said Professor Nigel Titchener-Hooker, the Dean of UCL Engineering, further indicating that UCL and HORIBA had the know how to advance things to the next level that benefit society.
