Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed his desire to strengthen Maldives-United Kingdom relations. In a tweet welcoming the incoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, President Solih expressed his desire to collaborate on global issues of shared concern and expand Maldives-United Kingdom ties.

In his congratulatory message, the President of the Maldives wished Rishi Sunak good luck in implementing his vision for the United Kingdom as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. On assuming office as the third prime minister of the UK in two months, Rishi Sunak stated that he was unafraid of the magnitude of the responsibilities ahead of him.

Further, he pledged to restore trust, rebuild confidence, and lead the nation through an economic catastrophe. The 42-year-old leader has only been an electoral politician for the past seven years. He has now been entrusted with ending the infighting and bickering going on at Westminster, which has shocked investors and scared foreign allies. Outside the Prime Minister’s house on Downing Street, where it is customary for him to stand with his family and political supporters, he remarked, “I fully realize how hard things are”. As a devoted Hindu, he took his oath on the Hindu Holy Book Baghvat Geeta and lit Diwali candles at Number 10.

President Solih also remarked that the United Kingdom was the first country with which the island established diplomatic ties in 1965, and that the two nations have collaborated closely on matters of mutual interest ever since. He also revealed his desire to elevate the bilateral ties to new heights in the future. According to economists and investors, Sunak’s takeover will calm markets, but they have cautioned that he has few simple alternatives when millions of people are experiencing a cost-of-living crisis.
