Global (Commonwealth Union) – World Water Day is an international event held annually on March 22nd to raise awareness about the importance of water and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The theme for World Water Day 2023 is “Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis.”

The resolution marking World Water Day was initially taken up by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 1992, followed by March 22 being declared as World Water Day with events worldwide since being initiated. The very first World Water Day was held in 1993.

Valuing water means recognizing the crucial role that water plays in sustainable development, from ensuring food security and maintaining biodiversity to generating economic growth and supporting human health. It also means recognizing the intrinsic value of water and the cultural and spiritual significance that it holds for many communities around the world.

To mark World Water Day, events and activities are organized across the globe to raise awareness about the importance of water and advocate for sustainable water management practices. These events may include seminars, workshops, educational programs, and community outreach activities.

The United Nations also uses World Water Day to launch its annual World Water Development Report, which provides insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with global water management. The report focuses on a different aspect of water management each year, providing recommendations for policy-makers, practitioners, and other stakeholders.

The sustainable management of freshwater resources is a critical issue for the future of our planet, and World Water Day serves as an important reminder of this fact. It is a time to reflect on the value of water and the urgent need to protect this precious resource for future generations. By raising awareness and promoting sustainable water management practices. People can work together to ensure that water remains a fundamental element for the well-being of people and the planet. As many experts have indicated that future conflicts may revolve around the scarcity of fresh water, the need to preserve water and give access to the millions of people who struggle to get access to fresh water is a key focus each year in marking World Water Day.
