Health & Medicine, Canada (Commonwealth Union) – Many factors that can increase the risk of abnormal blood clotting, including certain medical conditions (such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and stroke), genetic factors, and certain medications. Abnormal blood clotting can be a serious medical condition and may require treatment with anticoagulant medications to prevent further clotting.

Blood thinners that have increased safety and effectiveness may be on the way after a groundbreaking finding by researchers at The University of British Columbia (UBC) along with the University of Michigan, was recently published in Nature Communications.

The universities brought together their expertise in blood clotting systems and chemical synthesis, where the researchers have firmed a new compound known as MPI 8 that provides the potential to avoid blood clots with no elevation in risk of bleeding, which is a frequent side effect of the present blood thinners.
