Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ Batik Air, a Malaysian airline, has launched direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to the Maldives, signifying a major advancement for the tourism sector of the archipelago nation. Formerly known as MalindoAir, Batik Air’s maiden flight arrived at Velana International Airport (VIA) in the Maldives and received a grand welcome with a water salute. The first flight carried 121 passengers on board. Prior to the launch of direct flights, Batik Air had been operating three weekly flights between Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and the Maldives since May 2023.

With the introduction of direct flights, Batik Air will now operate daily flights between Malaysia and the Maldives. For its operations in the Maldives, the airline will employ a Boeing 737 aircraft that can accommodate 180 passengers. Further, Batik Air boasts a comprehensive network of 50 destinations, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Australia.
The commencement of direct flights to the Maldives is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the expansion of the tourism industry and increase visitors from Malaysia. Additionally, it is anticipated that the availability of direct flights to Malaysia will alleviate the challenges encountered by locals when traveling to the country. Malaysia is one of the major tourist destinations among enthusiastic Maldivian travelers, and a considerable number of Maldivian students are currently pursuing their higher education in Malaysia.

According to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the launch of Batik Air’s direct flights, along with other airlines such as Flyness from Saudi Arabia and the upcoming Virgin Atlantic flights from the United States to VIA, provides international passengers with more convenient options to explore the Maldives’ natural beauty and warm hospitality. As more airlines are operating flights to the Maldives, the country’s tourism industry is anticipated to witness major growth, attract more arrivals, as well as further establish itself as a prime location for international tourists.
