Pakistan (Commonwealth Union)_ Aftab ur Rahman Rana, the Managing Director of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), sees mountaineering as a strategic approach to not only increase tourist influx in Pakistan but also to elevate the tourism sector, contribute to eco-conservation, generate employment opportunities, and stimulate business growth. In an interview, he emphasized the vast potential that lies in Pakistan’s stunning mountain ranges, including the Himalayas, Karakoram, and Hindukush, which possess cultural and ecological significance.

Further, Pakistan is home to five out of the world’s 14 peaks that exceed 8,000 meters and over 100 peaks above 7,000 meters. Encompassing about 61% of the country’s land, Pakistan’s diverse landscapes range from sea level to elevations exceeding 8,000 meters, featuring picturesque coastal areas with parallel mountain views. Each province in Pakistan hosts different mountain ranges, each with its own unique ecosystem, flora and fauna, wildlife, localities, and cultural diversity. Thus, mountaineering and rock climbing offer more than just adventure; they present a vast canvas of diversified beauty, contributing to mainstream tourism.

Aftab highlighted that the rising popularity of mountaineering corresponds to an increased demand for various services, such as guides, catering, transportation, accommodation, and more. The PTDC is actively working to showcase Pakistan’s natural wonders globally, fostering financial prosperity and enhancing the country’s positive image. Aftab emphasized the importance of involving both local stakeholders and foreign departments related to mountaineering and tourism. Collaboration with local and international mountaineering agencies can lead to economic destination charges, improved facilitation, guided expeditions, and gear availability.
Moreover, Aftab stressed that continuous development and maintenance of trekking routes, base camps, and quality mountain huts and lodges at strategic points are crucial for the sustained growth of mountaineering. PTDC’s participation in global adventure tourism events and trade shows highlights Pakistan’s potential for mountaineering activities.
