The teenager, who was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, passed away following a cardiac arrest despite intensive medical efforts. The boy, identified as a resident of Pandikkad in Malappuram, initially sought treatment at a private hospital before his condition deteriorated, prompting a transfer to the government facility. His death has sparked fears of a potential Nipah virus outbreak, prompting swift action from health authorities.

State Health Minister Veena George expressed deep concern over the situation, confirming that the teenager’s death was due to the Nipah virus infection. Accordingly, a high-level meeting was convened as a result of an outbreak of the virus infection that has spread in northern Malappuram district. She stated, “All efforts were made to save his life,” noting that the deceased suffered a cardiac arrest despite receiving monoclonal antibody treatment brought in from NIV-Pune. George disclosed that four individuals who had been in close contact with the teenager have already shown symptoms of the virus, with one reported to be in critical condition and receiving life support. Additionally, immediate measures are underway to contain the spread of the virus, including extensive testing and quarantine protocols.
